Apple Music is introducing a new metadata system designed to inform listeners when artificial intelligence has been used in the creation of music on its platform. The feature, called transparency tags, allows labels, distributors, and artists to disclose AI involvement in a track’s production.
As generative AI tools become increasingly common in music-making, the company says the new system is intended to provide listeners with clearer insight into how songs are created. The tags will appear within a track’s metadata and can indicate whether artificial intelligence contributed to the sound recording itself, the songwriting process, the artwork, or accompanying music videos.
The initiative relies on self-reporting, meaning that those uploading music are responsible for identifying when AI tools were used. While this approach raises questions about enforcement, Apple sees the feature as an early step toward greater transparency across the music industry.
With AI-generated content rapidly increasing across streaming platforms, Apple’s move reflects a broader effort to address the growing influence of artificial intelligence in music production and to give listeners more context about the music they hear.
