Mayor of the City of Zagreb, Tomislav Tomašević, announced at a press conference on Tuesday the renovation of the Medika socio-cultural center for next year. He stated that cultural content will remain there as before and that the renovation will be carried out in phases so that Medika’s program is not interrupted.
Cultural activities have been taking place in Medika since 2009, after squatters entered the premises in 2008, including the club program at AKC Attack. After the devastating earthquake in Zagreb in March 2020, the Medika building sustained significant damage and now requires repair and reconstruction.
As reported by Index.hr, during the press conference, Tomašević was asked about the financing of the Medika club in the amount of 220,000 euros, which likely referred to funding for the AKC Attack association that shares the space with other organizations. A question was also raised as to why there are no security guards on site, especially in light of recent tragic events and the fact that late-night concerts are held there.
At the beginning of his response, Mayor Tomašević expressed condolences to the victim’s family and friends.
“The incident you are referring to happened during the day, not at night during any of the events in the Medika space. I would leave it to the police to investigate what happened and why,” said Tomašević, adding that the City of Zagreb has been funding AKC Attack since 2009, and that the association’s programs are also funded by the Ministry of Culture, European funds, and other sources.
