A packed auditorium and guests from all over the world enjoyed the premiere of the only Croatian theatre festival in English. Under the starry sky, with the magnificently shining Lovrjenac (Dubrovnik) after the rain, the Midsummer Scene Festival last night officially opened its 12th season with the world premiere of the play “One for All – A Three Musketeers Tale”. The only Croatian theatre festival in English once again showed why it has become an indispensable part of the Dubrovnik cultural summer over the years.
Written by Filip Krenus and directed by British director Sean Aita, the play tells the story of an aging D’Artagnan, imprisoned alongside a group of washed-up actors. He attempts to relive the memories of his greatest adventures. A unique feature of the production is that just five actors portray nearly forty different characters, creating a dynamic and playful theatrical adventure that kept the audience captivated from the first scene to the last.
“After months of preparation and dedicated work, the greatest reward for the entire team was seeing Lovrjenac packed with people and feeling the audience’s reaction. Tonight, we once again confirmed that theatre is a universal language connecting people from all over the world. We are especially proud to have presented the world premiere of this play right here in Dubrovnik and to have launched another season of the Midsummer Scene Festival,” said Jelena Maržić, the festival’s executive producer and co-founder.
This year’s festival, in addition to the main production, also features a series of accompanying cultural programs that further connect Dubrovnik’s heritage with an international audience. Among them, the monodrama “A Wizard in the Cave”, dedicated to Marin Getaldić on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of his death, stands out, as well as the presentation of a new English translation of Držić’s “Plakir”, also translated by Filip Krenus.
The play “One for All” will be performed on Lovrjenac until July 5, after which it will move to Hvar, where it will be a guest on July 7 and 8 as part of the celebration of the 65th anniversary of the Hvar Summer Festival.
The Midsummer Scene Festival is a joint project of Brilliant Events Dubrovnik and Honey-Tongued Theatre Productions Ltd. London, with the support of the City of Dubrovnik, the Dubrovnik Tourist Board, and numerous partners, sponsors, and Dubrovnik cultural institutions. Tickets for the remaining performances are available via the ulaznice.hr system and one hour before the start of the performance at the Lovrjenac Fortress.
