TikTok has officially announced the shutdown of its dedicated music streaming service, TikTok Music. The platform will cease operations on November 28, 2024, marking the end of a significant chapter in TikTok’s expansion into the music streaming arena.
“We will be closing TikTok Music at the end of November in order to focus on our goal of furthering TikTok’s role in driving even greater music listening and value on music streaming services, for the benefit of artists, songwriters and the industry”, stated Ole Obermann, TikTok’s global head of music business development for Billboard Pro.
The announcement has sparked discussions across various media outlets and social media platforms. Industry analysts suggest that TikTok’s exit from the music streaming market underscores the intense competition and high barriers to entry in the sector. Building a sustainable music streaming service requires substantial investment in licensing, technology, and user acquisition, areas where TikTok may have found it difficult to compete against well-established players.
