A major step forward for inclusivity in the music industry has been marked by the launch of UnMute, the UK’s first artist roster dedicated to championing musicians with disabilities. Created by Global Local, the initiative aims to tackle long-standing barriers faced by disabled artists and provide them with meaningful opportunities.
Developed over two years and led by creative director Andrew Lansley, UnMute is not just a short-term programme but an active, ongoing platform. It offers professional development, mentoring, and direct access to opportunities such as live performances, recording, and publishing.
The project was created in collaboration with key industry partners including Musicians’ Union, Attitude Is Everything, and Drake Music, ensuring that both artists and venues are better equipped to support accessibility needs.
UnMute already features a diverse roster of talent, including collectives like Drag Syndrome and Deaf Rave, alongside individual artists such as DJ Flood, RightKeysOnly, and Kray-z Legz. These acts have begun securing bookings at major UK festivals like Shambala and The Great Escape, signaling early industry support.
Beyond representation, the initiative addresses systemic inequalities. Disabled musicians often face reduced earnings and limited access to opportunities, as well as challenges in communicating their needs to venues. UnMute aims to change this by creating clearer pathways and encouraging the adoption of tools like accessibility riders, making performances more inclusive.
Ultimately, UnMute represents a shift in how the music industry approaches diversity—moving beyond awareness toward tangible change. By amplifying disabled voices and embedding accessibility into the live music ecosystem, the project sets a powerful precedent for a more inclusive future.
