The second exhibition in the series „Prozori umjetnosti“ (eng. “Windows of Art”) is currently on display at the Ilica Gallery, located in the Tomislav Gotovac Passage in Zagreb. This series, consisting of seven exhibitions, runs from November 2024 to February 2025. The multi-layered project builds upon Zagreb’s tradition of radical artistic practices, bringing art into public spaces and fostering initiatives beyond traditional institutions.
The exhibitions are presented as wall-mounted newspapers, combining collages of text and images. This format emphasizes dialogue between artists and the audience. Materials used include archival documents and digital images, providing a comprehensive overview of historical and contemporary artistic practices.
The program draws inspiration from the groundbreaking exhibitions by the Group of six authors (1975–1979), who brought art out of galleries and into public spaces such as streets, city squares, and even public baths and beaches. The concept is also influenced by the intimate Prozori umjetnosti exhibitions that artist Željko Jerman organized in the window of his fence on Voćarska Street. The current exhibition location, Tomislav Gotovac Passage, is one of Zagreb’s busiest locations and has been adapted for displays in architectural showcases. This creates an intimate atmosphere conducive to close observation and reflection.
Using windows and shopfronts as exhibition spaces makes art more accessible to the public, reintegrating artistic practice into the city’s daily life. Historically, windows and displays have played a pivotal role in presenting unconventional art, from Studio G in Preradovićeva Street and the bookshop window of August Šenoa to the Multimedia Center on Savska Street.
This gallery project was initiated by Aleksandar Battista Ilić, a pioneer of Community Art. The current series of exhibitions is curated by Darko Šimičić from the Tomislav Gotovac Institute, with a focus on education and democratization of artistic content.
