On November 8, in front of the walls of St. Elisabeth Cathedral in Košice, Slovakia, Pope Leo XIV appeared on the large screen behind the stage to greet and bless the crowd ahead of the set by Padre Guilherme, widely known as the “DJ priest.”
Padre Guilherme, from Guimarães, Portugal, was born in 1974 and has been a priest since 1999. According to his biography, electronic dance music has been a part of his life since he was very young, and he has been connected to music since his seminary days.
During the pandemic, he took advantage of live-streaming and began hosting weekly DJ sets, experimenting with new sounds and techniques. It was then that he started his musical journey into the world of techno. These livestreams eventually drew international attention, leading to features in Reuters, Forbes, and Clubbing TV, among others.
Since then, he has been bringing Christians together, blending a love of techno and music with faith. He currently performs techno infused with strong elements of folk and sacred music, with characteristic melodic-techno motifs always present. This time, he even received support from the Holy See.
