If you want to hear what the future of funk sounds like, Peti Kupe is the place to be on March 11th. Here comes MonoNeon, the man described by the inimitable Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers as “the best electric bass player in the world.”
Dwayne Thomas Jr., better known as MonoNeon, is not just a musician – he’s a phenomenon. He hails from Memphis, the cradle of soul, but his sound travels far beyond the boundaries of known genres. He gained worldwide fame with his avant-garde style on YouTube, but also as one of the last musicians to work closely with the legendary Prince.

He won a Grammy Award for his participation in the album “King’s Disease” by rapper Nas, and the list of his collaborations sounds like an encyclopedia of modern music: from George Clinton and Mavis Staples to Pete Rock and Mac Miller.
Recognizable by his colorful costumes, socks over his head and Fender Jazz Bass guitar turned “upside down”, MonoNeon brings an energy that combines Southern soul, experimental funk and hip-hop into an inseparable whole. His live performances are legendary, and now, after appearing on major world stages such as the Newport Jazz Festival and Montreal, he comes to the more intimate yet energetic space of Peti Kupe.
