According to a new data analysis from ROSTR, electronic and dance music accounted for a dominant 39% of this year’s Coachella lineup, making up four out of ten performances at the legendary festival.
The festival’s organizer, Goldenvoice, has traditionally focused more on booking pop and rock artists, but this year’s Coachella featured artists like Amelie Lens, Boris Brejcha, Indira Paganotto, Zedd, Sara Landry, Above & Beyond, The Prodigy, as well as Beltran and Layton Giordani.
Last year, a shift in the popularity of EDM at the California festival became evident when they introduced a new stage, Quasar, where this year’s performances included Martinez Brothers in a b2b combo with Loco Dice, Barry Cant Swim, 2Many DJs, Tiesto, deadmau5, Zhu, Kaskade, Alesso, and Gorgon City.
Despite the large number of electronic and dance music acts, none of them were headliners, with the role this year going to megastars like Lady Gaga, Green Day, Post Malone, and Travis Scott. However, the only guest who joined Lady Gaga on stage was French electronic music icon Gesaffelstein.
“Big production was an essential part of the “EDM” boom in the early 2010s and has always been a big part of the EDM experience. ‘Underground’ shows with no production emerged in response to that, and now you’re seeing the pendulum swing back the other way in many cases with underground artists building big shows. In this way we’re seeing big productions with better music and it’s a winning combo.” Alex Becket said to EDM.com last year, who became the powerhouse agency’s first electronic music agent over a decade ago.
