World Music Day is an international event celebrating music. It is marked on the first day of summer at the time of the longest day and shortest night.
The celebration of World Music Day introduced Croatia into the world chain of countries that play, sing, listen and live music in a similar way, and it has become a traditional all-day manifestation in our country that emphasizes the importance of music in everyday life. The idea of celebrating the importance of music started in 1976 in France, where the American musician Joel Cohen, a radio DJ, suggested enjoying music all day during the first day of the solstice. Five years later, the former French Minister of Culture, Jack Lang, accepted the initiative and raised it to the national level. The first such celebration, called Fête de la Musique (Music Festival), was held on June 21, 1982 in Paris. To date, over 110 countries on all continents with almost 500 cities have joined the celebration of World Music Day.
With this event, HGU, through the work of its branches, improves the musical offer by promoting a large number of musical workers and performers of various musical genres; from classical, ethno, pop, rock or jazz expressions.
